Top marks to Dominic Perrottet who this week unveiled a $490 million dollar plan to provide tax-payer funded incentives to buyers of electric cars. From September 1 buyers of electric cars priced below $78,000 will be exempt from stamp duty saving up to $3,000 while buyers of the first 25,000 examples priced below $68,750 will receive a tax payer funded $3,000 discount. The car industry was quick to applaud the $490 million dollar plan placing N.S.W. ahead of the rest of the country. However, the new initiatives are designed to offset the introduction of a new 2.5 cents per kilometre charge for electric vehicles and 2 cents per kilometre charge for plug-in hybrids due to be implemented by 2027 or once electric vehicles make up 30 per cent of new car sales, whichever comes first. In Victoria, the road usage charges come into affect from July 1 this year my personal view is they shouid also start in N.S.W. at the same time.
