One in four children live in families impacted by mental illness
Chris Giles the CEO of Kookaburra Kids joins Luke Grant to talk about how we help kids living with parents suffering from mental health issues.
There’s disturbing research out today suggesting that roughly a quarter, or 23% of Aussie children live in families where at least one parent has or had a mental illness.
Add to that the impacts on mental health from new external environmental factors such as COVID- 19, floods and fires, an estimated 644,000 young people are currently in need of support. This is a huge problem.
Kookaburra Kids currently support over 2,600 young people aged 8-18 years old, through camps, activity days and online connect sessions services.
Evidence shows that these programs have a significant impact in improving the mental health literacy of the participating young people which leads to better long term mental health outcomes. Kookaburra Kids encourages Aussies to donate to help kids thrive beyond the impacts of family mental illness.
