Record amount of asylum seekers fly into Australia

Clinton Maynard

Clinton is joined by Abul Rizvi, former deputy secretary of the Department of Immigration, to discuss reports of over 2300 people seeking asylum in Australia in May, the highest monthly total since the Albanese government took office.

This includes more than 300 arrivals from China, 182 from Vietnam, 152 from Colombia, and 148 from India.

Additionally, 119 people from Palestine applied for protection visas in May, the highest since the October 7 Hamas attacks in Israel. Since October, 416 asylum claims have come from the Palestinian Authority, a significant increase from previous months.

May’s total is nearly the highest on record, just below the 2800 applicants in 2018.
