Redland Mayor Karen Williams breaks silence on drink-driving crash
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams has apologised to the community after a drink-driving incident in June while defending her decision to stay in the job.
In her first candid interview since the crash, Cr Williams told Spencer Howson on 4BC on Sunday why she refused to stand down, revealing she received hundreds of messages of support.
After months of working to regain the trust of her peers, she said it was time to clear the air with the community.
“It’s been a pretty tough time, and pulling yourself together and getting on with the job takes some effort,” she said on Sunday.
She said it was a “stupid mistake” but she believed she deserved a chance to make amends.
Cr Williams was charged with drink driving and was disqualified for driving for 6 months.
“With every person that I’ve seen since the 23rd of June, I say sorry,” she said.
“I am really sorry that I disappointed my community.
“If I could also say there is no one more disappointed in me, than me.”
In the candid interview, she revealed she received hundreds of messages from people all over Australia.
