Subaru XV: refined in many ways

David Berthon

Talking about the second generation Subaru XV cross over SUV – really a high riding wagon with 220 mm of ground clearance this is vastly improved package to the first XV released some five years ago. Subaru have refined it in many ways – the 2.0-litre 156kW engine has been re-worked so too the CVT or continuously variable automatic which was one of the worst features of the first series. It’s better but still not perfect, not as raucous and more controllable with engine revs. I’d still prefer a straight six-speed auto but on the plus side all four models in the XV range, come with manual paddle shifters. The good news is a wider cabin sitting on a 30mm longer wheelbase, and it no longer feels cramped. Much quieter too, more refined in all it does with standard X-mode all-wheel- drive on all models from the larger Forester. Prices of the four grades now start $1,250 below the old model, from 27,990, but all have a lot more equipment. I’m David Berthon
