Luke Grant speaks with Dr Gary Johns, former Minister in the Keating Labor government & Secretary of ‘Recognise a Better Way’ (The Voice No Case Committee Incorporated), who have launched their first paper analysing the proposed Voice to Parliament model and the detail included in the Calma -Langton report.

The report includes many of the details and assumptions that most Australians will be unaware of and explains the consequences of the insertion of a Voice to Parliament on our constitution, our democratic processes and on existing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations.

“Recognise a Better Way, like most Australians, has a deep sympathy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We understand their desire for recognition and for help for those who are in need,” says Mr Johns.

“Our concern is that the Prime Minister’s proposals as set out in the Uluru statement make the form of recognition far too political and do not address need.”
This paper will be the first of three analysing the full Uluru package with subsequent reports into the truth and treaty elements to be released in coming months.
