‘We’ve outgrown it’: Queensland Cricket say it’s time to move on from the Gabba
The clock is ticking on the aging Gabba with many saying the stadium needs an overhaul. This is especially apparent as almost all of Day 1 of the third Test between Australia and India was rained out.
Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, ‘in relation to the Gabba, we’ve outgrown it.’
‘We’ve had a full house the last couple of days and the Lions, for instance, they’ve got well over 60,000 members now and heading to 70 [thousand],’ Svenson said.
‘I think Greg Swan, who I was with over the weekend, said nine of their 11 games are sold out.’
‘We’ve got really strong crowds at cricket, but also test cricket and the Big Bash as well.’
Queensland Cricket has endorsed a stadium at Victoria Park, but is awaiting the results of the 100-day review into Olympic venues authorised by the Crisafulli Government.
