What are the chances of Earth being hit by an asteroid?

Phil O'Neil

Phil speaks with Kate Kitagawa, Director of Space Education at Japan’s Aerospace Exploration Agency, about the risk of an asteroid impact.

The newly discovered asteroid 2024 YR4 is now considered the riskiest ever detected, with NASA estimating a 3.1% chance of striking Earth in 2032 and the European Space Agency slightly lower at 2.8%.

Uncertainty remains as astronomers are still mapping its four-year orbit, making future predictions challenging.
