Police given new search powers under ‘Jack’s Law’
Queensland Police will have greater powers to combat knife crime after new laws were introduced.
The law will be known as Jack’s law, in memory of 17-year-old Jack Beasley, who died after he was fatally stabbed while walking home in Surfers Paradise in 2019.
His parents have campaigned for change in the wake of his death.
Yesterday Jack’s Law was introduced into parliament.
Police will have more powers to search people on the streets and on public transport throughout Queensland for weapons including knives, using a metal detection wand.
A trial on the Gold Coast last year gleaned staggering results.
Police uncovered knives, knuckle dusters and replica firearms.
