Prominent road safety advocate adds voice to push for tighter laws for P-platers

A prominent road safety campaigner in Queensland has thrown her support behind a push for tighter restrictions on young P-plate drivers.
An online petition started by a grieving NSW father is campaigning for P-platers to be banned from carrying passengers within the first 12 months of having their provisional licence.
It would follow similar restrictions in New Zealand.

Road safety advocate Judy Lindsay, whose daughter Hayley Russell tragically died in 2009, believes Australia should look at introducing it.
“If there is a program in place, and it’s working in New Zealand, maybe we can take it on board here,” she told Peter Fegan, filling in on Brisbane Live.
“It’s going to be a lot more involved in policing it, but I think if it’s working, its’ something maybe we need to look at and maybe make it happen.”

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the young driver cohort remained the highest risk in terms of crashes and fatalities.
He said even though New Zealand had the restriction in place, young drivers remained over-represented, but he said he would ask his department to investigate it.
He told Peter Fegan he will consider whether Queensland should introduce it.
“I am happy to look at it further in more depth, get some information from New Zealand to see whether it’s had a positive impact,” he said on Brisbane Live.
