Protest action on the cards after long-awaited Brisbane flight path report
More flights should take off over Moreton Bay and the number of flights over people’s homes should be reduced, an independent review into the impact of Brisbane’s second runway has found.
The final report by international air traffic consultancy Trax International also recommended Brisbane’s “airspace systems need to be optimised to improve aircraft noise outcomes”.
A number of communities have been complaining about excessive noise in recent years.
The long-awaited report recommended a number of changes after the parallel runway was introduced back in 2020.
But it doesn’t mention capping flights or curfews.
Dr Marcus Foth, the acting chair of the Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance, said there were some “useful” points in the report.
He said the report, by a UK firm, found said the project would never have proceeded in the UK.
He said a protest was “definitely on the cards” but the group was waiting to see how the federal government responds to the report and the ongoing community concerns.
“My reading of the room, the community is tired, they have been exposed to excessive noise pollution for more than two years,” he told Neil Breen on Brisbane Live.
“The Trax report is saying that the more substantive changes won’t kick in until 2025, that’s half a decade of being exposed over 110 flights a day, with the prospect of it increasing to 110 an hour.”
