Mater Hospital will open Queensland’s first integrated perinatal mental health centre next year to help address an unmet need of parents.

Catherine’s House will help provide new support to parents dealing with depression, anxiety and other mental health issues while pregnant or after welcoming a new baby.

“This is an extraordinary venture,” CEO of Mater Group, Dr Peter Steer, told Sofie Formica.

“About 20 per cent of mothers and 10 per cent of fathers suffer some form of mental health challenge during the pregnancy period, and there’s a real unmet need out there.”

It’s a 10-bed facility, but it also includes a comprehensive outpatient service, individual and group therapy service and home visiting service.
