Qld Trucking Association boss says ‘severe driver shortage’ is the cause of persisting supply issues
In today’s National Cabinet, the government made announcements to help alleviate the supply shortages that continue to hit Queensland.
Licencing will now be based on competency and skill tests rather than driving time, and Australia will also now recognise New Zealand licences.
Speaking to Scott Emerson on 4BC Drive, Gary Mahon from the Queensland Trucking Association said they had advocated for changes to help supply chain problems for the last six to 12 months.
“We’re looking at a program to help fast-track that experience to be able to make them job-ready.”
“We certainly have a severe driver shortage at the moment, and there are people out there with truck licences looking to get a start.”
Concerning changing the licencing scheme among truck drivers, Mr Mahon said that the QTA is looking for further information on what is being done to fix the shortages amid RAT kit struggles.
“On the one hand, it’s a good thing, but on the other hand (it) will take some considerable time to do.”
