Queensland coach company eyeing green future ditches diesel fleet

A regional coach service is trading its fleet of diesel-powered buses for a green alternative in a move it says is an Australian-first.

Emerald Coaches has set a target to reach net zero emissions by 2040 – 10 years ahead of the federal government’s current commitment.

Co-owner Michael Baulch told Sofie Formica the decision was made partly because “it’s the right thing to do”, but also for its long-term benefits.

“We’re not sure how much longer the diesel vehicles are going to be operating, so I’m making investment decisions now on vehicles which we’re expecting to operate in 20 years.

“We have difficulty getting mechanics and other technicians, particularly in the areas we operate, so we may not have people that are going to be maintaining these vehicles in 20 years’ time.

“We thought we’d make the decision sooner rather than later to transfer over to the new technology.”
