The Queensland Teachers Union has lauded the “common sense” approach taken by the state government ahead of students returning to school for term one.

Students from prep to year 10 have had their return to the classroom delayed by one week under the plan.

Remote learning will start for students in years 11 and 12 today.

If students show COVID-19 symptoms they will be given a rapid antigen test (RAT) and be told to get tested at home.

Leah Olsson from the Queensland Teachers Union told Scott Emerson teachers were happy with this approach.

“We know that if a student or a staff member show symptoms while they are at school, they’ll be able to access free RATs from their school,” she said on 4BC Drive.

“And parents and carers will need to collect their children to administer the test at home.

“So the message is I guess … stay at home if you’re sick, get tested if you have symptoms.”
