‘Really missing the point’: Whistleblower’s scathing reaction to integrity review

A whistleblower who raised concerns about the integrity of the state government says an integrity probe is “missing the point”.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced last Friday a four-month investigation into the culture of accountability in her government will be led by Professor Peter Coaldrake.

It will probe interactions between integrity bodies, public servants and ministers and how ethics and integrity complaints are dealt with.

Professor Coaldrake last week told Scott Emerson he will not be dealing with individual complaints and those he interviews will “undoubtedly be identified in the back of the report”.

But former state archivist Mike Summerell says the parameters are “really missing the point”.

“I think it’s a good step forward but without talking to the former public servants, they’re really missing the point,” Mr Summerell said.

“A lot of the people who currently do well in the system are essentially sycophants, they do well by actually playing this game.

“These people have benefitted from the current system so I have a real concern that if you’re talking to these people, you’re not going to get the truth.”

Mr Summerell also noted without promising anonymity to interviewees, the investigation is unlikely to turn up any breakthrough findings.

“I’m sure Peter Coaldrake is excellent but I would feel very, very uncomfortable speaking without some protection, without anonymity around these things.

“There’s no way people want to step up and talk to someone when there’s a fear their names could be printed at the end of a report.

“It’s asking for a negative result, to be perfectly honest.”
