A road safety advocate will launch a petition for Redland City Mayor Karen Williams to stand down, after she admitted to driving after drinking last week.

The mayor said she had “several glasses of wine” before driving her car through Cleveland, where she crashed into a tree on Thursday night after the council’s budget was handed down.

She has apologised for the “serious error in judgement”.

The mayor had been on a video meeting earlier in the evening with families who had lost loves ones to drink drivers, including Judy Linsday.

Ms Lindsay’s 20-year-old daughter Hailey died in a crash involving a drink driver in 2009.

She has called for the mayor to resign and is launching a petition.

“She is in a position on our community that we need to respect, how the hell are we able to get our youth under control and get other people in our community and in Queensland and in Australia, to realise hey you can’t drink and drive.”

It has also been announced Ms Williams will not be continuing as a member on the board of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner made the announcement last night on Twitter, saying Ms Williams had informed him of her decision.

“I sincerely thank Mayor Williams who has always been and continues to be a strong advocate for the Games.”
