RNA Showgrounds pitched as Brisbane Lions’ temp home
A 20,000-seat stadium could be constructed at the Brisbane Showgrounds as the Gabba undergoes a $1 billion revamp.
With the Olympics going to the Gabba, the stadium will be under construction from 2025.
The boutique Brisbane Showgrounds stadium would host the Brisbane Lions’ home games and a number of cricket fixtures.
“We’re one of the few options the government’s considering,” RNA CEO Brendan Christou told Laurel, Gary and Mark.
He said architects are currently considering whether the Showgrounds could be built to the size that’s needed for major sporting events.
“That’s actually looking really promising so it can be done.
“Obviously with our stadium, it’s heritage-listed, so the John McDonald, the Ernest Baynes [stands], those ones are untouchable and they would need work to upgrade them but they can’t be removed.
“So the floater, I guess is that Machinery Hill, which is pretty old anyhow, doing something in that location to get the exact dimensions and that seating capacity.”
