The Labor Party is facing major internal struggles over its asylum seeker policy ahead of its national conference.

At least a dozen motions have been submitted by various Labor branches to the conference with none being fully in favour of the party’s current stance on border protection, The Australian reports.

Smithy’s All-Star Rowan Dean says if Labor returns to power, strong border protection will be a thing of the past.

“Of course Labor, in their heart and soul, in their DNA, are opposed to stopping the boats,” Rowan tells Chris Smith.

“We know that because when they’re in power they immediately let all the boats in, thousands of people die. There was a disaster… and Tony Abbott had to come in and stop them all over again.

“We know that if Labor get back into power the boats are going to start coming again immediately.”

Labor’s national conference will start on June 30 and Rowan is questioning how the party will deal with conflict in its ranks.

“The question is are Labor going to pretend and lie all the way up to the election that they’re going to keep the same policy when we know that they’re not?”
