Royce Simmons closes in on finishing his ‘Big Walk for Dementia’
Royce Simmons is closing in on completing his second Big Walk for Dementia and says he’ll keep doing the walk for as long as he can in the future.
Over the past 12 days, the former Rugby League legend has walked 313 kilometres from Dubbo to Bathurst, raising funds for dementia research and supporting local junior clubs.
Ahead of the final three kilometres, the 62-year-old, who suffers from the disease, opened up on this year’s successful campaign and says he’ll go round again next year if he can.
“The plan is to do it every year until my health gets to an area where I can’t do it,” Simmons said.
“For however long I can, I’ll keep walking and keep trying to do something because dementia is the biggest killer of women in the world, so we’ve got to cure this.”
The Big Marn was left in tears at the end of the interview, when reflecting on Simmons’ courageous effort.
