Salvos step in as millions of Australians struggle at Christmas
For most Australians, Christmas is the most joyous time of the year… but for others, it can be anything but.
New research released by the Salvation Army shows just how tough the festive season can be for some.
The survey, commissioned as part of the Red Shield Appeal, reveals six million people feel obligated to spend more than they can afford at Christmas.
Over last year’s festive period, three million people reported experiencing depression and two million people experienced social isolation.
The Salvation Army’s Major Paul Moulds tells Chris Smith hardship hits many Australians at this time of year.
“It’s a reminder that in Australia, even though we’re a country with relatively great economic prosperity, not everyone is enjoying that.”
Major Moulds is urging anyone who’s struggling this Christmas to seek assistance from the Salvation Army.
“We’ve got centres that are open so you can come and get some help.”
