Scathing interim report finds ‘widespread’ neglect in aged care system
An interim royal commission report has called the country’s aged care system “a shocking tale of neglect” that “diminishes Australia as a nation”.
After 10 months of hearings, the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety has handed down its interim report, which found the aged care sector is an “unkind and uncaring” system that commodifies people.
CEO of the Council of the Ageing Ian Yates tells Ross Greenwood the report confirms the system needs a complete overhaul.
“This is not just about more money and it’s not just about changing a few policy settings, it’s actually a fundamental rethink.
“We welcome this report because it vindicates what we and others have said for a long time: that the neglect and abuse that is out there is much more widespread than either governments or providers have been prepared to accept.”
