26-year-old Caserta and 25-year-old Amy Graham went swimming at Surfers Paradise around ten last night.
Members of the public observed the couple struggling and were able to assist Ms Graham to the beach.
Mr Caserta was unable to make it to shore and an extensive land, sea and air search has so far failed to locate him.
Conditions are being made all the more difficult due to gusty winds, a solid swell and murky water from this week’s heavy rain.
Nine News reporter Jesse Burns told Neil Breen hopes are fading.
