Government hold secret meeting on expanding commercial fishing bans
Earlier this year, both the State and Federal Governments imposed bans on commercial fishing, and recently held a secret meeting to propose additional bans that would impact Queenslanders.
The government has introduced bans on commercial fishing practices, including the prohibition of Gillnets from the Great Barrier Reef by mid-2027 and reductions in the allowable catch limits for Spanish Mackerel.
David Bobbermen, CEO of the Queensland Seafood Industries Association, told Peter Gleeson on Drive, “Under the veil of secrecy the Queensland Government has been working away, toiling away, trying to put the knife in the back of Queensland commercial fisherman yet again…”
“From the department’s own website there will be at least 300-400 direct and indirect fulltime equivalent jobs lost…it represents nearly $20 million a year to the regional towns and communities throughout Queensland, so it’ll be quite devastating…” Mr. Bobbermen continued.
