Shaquai Mitchell’s ‘biggest demon’ to conquer before inspiring All Stars selection
Rugby league fans now have two to watch from the Mitchell clan with Shaquai Mitchell joining the fray.
Shaquai will follow in his brother Latrell’s footsteps, playing for the Indigenous All Stars after his shock selection.
It was a long road to earn his place on the bench amid weight and mental health troubles, Shaquai told Ray Hadley.
“I had really bad patellar tendonitis in my left knee and that set me back a fair bit; I had a few hamstring tears as well,” he said.
“I started suffering with a lot of things when the injuries came through and my weight started fluctuating a lot.”
“The mental side of things was my biggest demon I had to fight – it was my depression and anxiety coming through.”
Ray was struck by Shaquai’s ability to talk openly about his struggles.
“You know that’s a very brave thing you just said, don’t you?”
