Should schools stop suspending kids who misbehave?
There are calls for schools to stop suspending misbehaving students, as it creates a cycle of disadvantage.
In 2017, almost 70,000 suspensions involving 44,000 students were recorded in NSW public schools.
Youth Off The Streets founder and CEO Father Chris Riley says teachers need more training in how to discipline students who behave badly.
He tells Chris Smith suspension demotivates kids and only causes more issues.
“The kids go back out of the school, feeling hostile, that no one’s going to really listen to them, creating gangs and all sorts of violence.
“They feel helpless and hopeless because no one believes in them.”
