Should Tony Abbott be sent to the Vatican?
There are calls for Tony Abbott to be appointed as Australia’s envoy to the Vatican after he failed to win a seat in government.
Former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer was the country’s first resident ambassador to the Holy See and has urged the Coalition to place Mr Abbott in the posting.
As Australia’s envoy to the Vatican, Mr Abbott would reside in Rome and be the main communication between the Catholic Church and the Australian government.
Chris Smith says the role may be one Mr Abbott would consider.
“There’s no doubt he’s incredibly well suited.
“He considered being a priest at one point.
“No doubt we all want to see him continue to serve and that might be something that is of interest to him.”
