The federal government is knocking claims they’ll force pensioners onto the controversial cashless debit card.

Residents on Bribie Island have been handed a pamphlet by Labor, warning the government wants to expand its cashless welfare card to all aged pensioners.

The card is being trialled on welfare recipients in other parts of the country and is designed to prevent spending on alcohol and gambling.

Minister for Families and Social Services Anne Ruston told Neil Breen the Coalition has no plans of the sort.

“I’ll say it again, I’ve probably said it a hundred times and I can’t be any clearer than this: we never have and we never will have a plan to force aged pensioners onto the cashless debit card.

“This is another one of their desperate scare campaigns by a weak leader without a plan for the Australian economy.”
