‘South Bank 3.0’: Plans revealed for new Olympic venue, water lagoon
A huge development of a parcel of land south of Brisbane will include a water lagoon, an Olympic whitewater centre and restoration of a heritage listed farmhouse.
The draft master plan for the Old Cleveland Road East at Birkdale has been approved by Redland City Council.
The draft plans for the Birkdale Community Precinct will now be put out for community consultation.
Redlands mayor Karen Williams says it’s an exciting project.
“I know that you’ve been talking to the Lord Mayor and not that we are competitive at all … but I think yesterday he launched South Bank 2.0, and I’m suggesting we’ve got South Bank 3.0, because it is a really big, exciting space for everybody,” she told Scott Emerson.
“It includes a South Bank-style water lagoon, it’s 62 hectares and it accommodates 7 different hubs … it is huge.”
She hopes the water lagoon and white water facility would hopefully be built by the 2032 Olympics.
