Stalemate continues over net-zero target
The Nationals will continue negotiations over Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s pathway to reaching net-zero by 2050.
The Nationals party room was yesterday presented with the government’s climate change plan, but failed to come to a decision after hours of discussions.
Rankin MP and Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers said there was still no policy from the government ahead of the Glasgow climate change conference.
“Net-zero by 2050 is pretty much the minimum that we need to see because if we get that cleaner and cheaper energy it means more jobs and more opportunities, so yes that’s our policy,” he told Scott Emerson.
“The Prime Minister wants it to be his policy too, but unfortunately we are being treated to this pretty unedifying spectacle of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet of this country waiting for a little permission slip for the National Party or a fringe elements of the National Party to see whether they are allowed to go down that path.”
He said there would no carbon tax under Labor.
