Stealth taxes tacked on to Queenslanders’ rates bills
Neil Breen believes the state government is “taxing us by stealth” on Queenslanders’ rates bills in order to fund the 2032 Olympic games.
4BC listener James from the Redlands revealed to Neil Breen on Brisbane Live that his rates bill for the April quarter had gone up $300 from the previous quarter.
James said he “just about died” when he opened the bill.
This is the bill that encompasses council rates and charges, water and sewerage charges, and state government charges all in the one bill.
But it was the state government charges that had both Neil Breen and 4BC listener James puzzled, as they had gone up nearly $200 from January to April.
James’ first thought for why the increases were happening was that “we’re having some Olympics that we can’t afford” and “they’re going to get the money by stealth”.
The listener said his neighbours in the Redlands have been “stung by similar charges”.
Neil Breen is urging anyone else experiencing similar increases in state government charges on their rates bills to get in touch.
