Straddie beaches awash with rubbish, broken plastic
Locals on North Stradbroke Island have reported thousands of tiny bits of plastic and rubbish washing up along Straddie’s pristine beaches.
Images captured on some of the beaches show the kilos of washed up rubbish, particularly on South Gorge beach.
President of the Friends of Stradbroke Island Group, Dick Copeman, said he spoke to a couple getting married tomorrow, who were trying to rake up and remove some of the rubbish.
“I personally noticed myself last Tuesday, which as you remember was the full moon, so I think the high tide has been part of the problem but it’s still there,” he told Scott Emerson.
Irrigation tubing, bottle tops, packets, toothpaste tubes, plastic forks and ziplock bags were among some of the items washing up on the previously pristine shoreline.
He says it’s the worst they’ve seen it, although it is getting progressively worse each year.
