Sugary cereals in the firing line of Health Star Rating shake-up
Sugary cereals are in the firing line under a proposed overhaul to the Health Star Rating system by advocacy group CHOICE.
They claim the current algorithm doesn’t accurately reflect how healthy foods are because it doesn’t take into account the different types of sugars.
They are calling for added sugars be included in the calculation of the health stars so that foods that are high in added sugars receive a lower rating.
CHOICE spokesperson Linda Przhedetsky tells Chris Smith the popular cereal Nutri-Grain currently holds four stars.
“We’ve seen products like Nutri-Grain lose as much as two and a half health stars when we take into account that added sugar calculation.
“Milo cereal also lost stars and we saw some sugar-laden yoghurts lose a few points.”
