Global tech companies have been issued with have been served with legal notices to show what they are doing to detect and remove child abuse material online.

Apple, Meta and Microsoft have been issued the notices by Australian authorities.

eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said the social media platforms need to be more transparent about the steps they are taking.

“The truth of the matter is, we still don’t know the full scale and scope of child sexual exploitation happening on the internet,” she told Sofie Formia on 4BC Afternoons.

“That’s part of why I issued the basic online safety expectations, and it’s designed as a tool to lift safety protections and practices across the industry, but to also drive transparency and accountability from tech companies.”

She said it was still unclear what platforms were doing to detect, prevent and remove child sexual exploitations material on their sites.
