‘That is not on’: One in five Brisbane cabbies caught breaking the rules
Queensland’s Transport Minister is promising a crackdown on dodgy taxi drivers will “only accelerate” in the coming months.
One in five Brisbane taxi drivers have been caught doing the wrong thing, including price gouging, negotiating fares and not running meters.
Minister Mark Bailey told Bill McDonald he was shocked by just how many drivers have been caught breaking the rules.
“I’m very disappointed to hear that’s the level of non-compliance,” he said. “That is not on, it’s not allowed.”
The state government will increase surveillance throughout December and January after issuing nearly 200 fines on drivers in November.
“It’s 3 in the morning, 4 in the morning, it could be a transport inspector – not an ordinary passenger – just dressed normally.
“The fines can be up to $5,500, so depending on what the infringement is, they’re pretty hefty.”
