Removing the cross from hot cross buns, Riser Bread have defended the decision to rename their seasonal treats.

Riser Bread in Toowong have eliminated the iconic cross from the top of the baked buns and instead renamed them ‘Easter-time Buns’.

Former Brumby’s CEO Michael Sherlock described the move as “woke madness”.

Sofie Formica addressed the story in 4BC Afternoons, but Riser Bread Co-Owner Tom Cooney joined Bill McDonald on Brisbane Live and confirmed that it was never meant to cause any offence.

Mr Cooney said the three owners of the bakery had a meeting where they came up with the idea to make a seasonal baked good that’s “non-denominational”.

“None of us are Christian, feels a bit weird to put a cross on there”, Mr Cooney said.

But what Bill McDonald was perplexed about was the price of the baked goods!
