There are fears a local architectural gem in Brisbane’s north could be razed.

A demolition certificate has been awarded to a private certifier to re-develop the ANZ building in Sandgate.

It has been vacant since the February floods since it was inundated.

Neil McCrossin, spokesperson for the Protect Sandgate’s Character group, says the Brisbane City Council’s heritage advisory committee advised it should be recommended for heritage protection.

It was designed by a firm associated with prominent Brisbane architect Frank Cowan.

“I am not an expert, but I believe it’s associated with that mid-century style of architecture,” he told Spencer Howson on 4BC Breakfast.

He questioned why council failed to act to secure the building’s future.
