The new plan to get Queenslanders behind the wheels of electric cars

The state government has announced a new plan to encourage people to buy electric cars.

From July 1, $3000 rebates will be on offer for electric vehicles to the value of $58,000.

There are currently six models on sale in Queensland the rebate will apply to.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has also announced a $10 million commitment to build more public charging stations.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey told Neil Breen the government wants to close the gap between electric vehicles and old-technology cars.

“We can get more of them on the road, it means we’ve got more clean energy out there, less emissions, acting on climate change.

“I think the more we get out there now, the more we will have a genuine secondhand market for people who can’t afford a new car to be able to buy one in a couple years’ time.”

He said many western-Queensland destinations will gain stations this year.

“We’re now at more than 8,000 electric vehicles in Queensland; there was only a thousand around four or five years ago.”
