The possible timeline for a republic referendum in Australia

A letter to the editor caught 4BC Summer Afternoons host Greg Cary’s eye this morning.

It was from David Muir, the Chair of the Real Republic movement.

In the letter, he talks about King Charles’ Christmas message and how it might look different if it was delivered by an Australian head of state.

He told Greg the discussion on whether Australia should become a republic has been reignited.

“Now for the first time, we have a government who have an Assistant Minister for the Republic,” he said.

“What is happening right now after all these years since the failed referendum in 1999 is that the republic is back on the political agenda, that’s a change.

“Once the discussions begin and the conversation begins around the country, I believe the support for the republic will come.”

He said he believes in the next term of government it could become a reality.

“When we host here in Brisbane the Olympic Games here in 2032, we’ll be able to have our own head of state as our representative at that Games.”
