‘This is seriously bad policy’: Tony Abbott savages his own government
Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott is sceptical about the federal government’s support for a plan to bankroll new coal and gas-fired power.
It’s in response to a recommendation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to invest in energy generation.
Malcolm Turnbull is deciding how to implement the proposal, as he tries to shore up support for the National Energy Guarantee (NEG).
Mr Abbott has trashed the NEG, telling Ray Hadley it will never solve Australia’s energy problems.
“This is seriously bad policy Ray. I repeat that… it’s is seriously bad policy.
“It doesn’t focus on reducing price which is really the only thing that counts. Its complete focus is on reducing emissions.”
The former PM believes his own government is ignoring a crucial first step in protecting our energy supply.
“If we’re serious about coal, keep Liddell open. And it’s got to happen now!
“A compulsory acquisition process needs to start now because I’m very suspicious of governments which demand something today on the basis of vague promises tomorrow.”
