Thousands turn out to break ‘Nutbush’ world record at Big Red Bash
A new world record has been set in the outback after thousands converged at the Birdsville Big Red Bash to dance the ‘Nutbush’.
4084 people peppered the sprawling red desert in remote south-west Queensland and kicked up dust to Tina Turner’s 1973 classic, Nutbush City Limits.
The event shattered a previous ‘Nutbush’ world record of 2878 dancers, which was set just last year at the 2021 Birdsville Big Red Bash.

A $15 registration fee to dance in the event saw more than $60,000 raised for the festival’s charity partner, the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
It brings the total funds raised for RFDS by the festival since 2016 to more than $435,000.
Today reporter Jess Millward told Tony Pilkington what stuck out to her was how seriously the dancers and organisers took the event.
“They had marshalls watching these people and if you weren’t doing the dance properly, or the actions, you were disqualified!
“So they could get 10 per cent of people doing it incorrectly, any more than that, they would’ve been disqualified [from the record].”
