A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for south-east Queensland as clouds roll cross Logan.

The Bureau of Meteorology detected the “very dangerous” storm at 3.30pm near Logan Village, Greenbank and Jimboomba.

Destructive winds, heavy rain and large hailstones are likely.

Energex spokesperson Danny Donald told Bill McDonald more than 2500 homes have lost power in Redbank Plains.

“We’re looking at the lightning strike count and there’s already been 6000 lightning strikes come through in that storm,” he said.

He said on-call crews were sent home early this morning to rest up ahead of what could become a big night.

The south-east sweltered through hot and humid conditions today, with temperatures climbing to 37°C in Ipswich and 36°C in Beaudesert.

“We’re preparing for more throughout the night and, in fact, into the early morning as well,” Mr Donald continued.
