TikTok could soon be banned from government devices in Australia, following in the footsteps of the US and UK.

The popular social media app is owned by Chinese company Bytedance, sparking fears Beijing is obtaining personal information from users.

It’s a claim that’s been defended by global TikTok executives but Internet 2.0 director Tom Kenyon told Sofie Formica since an initial review, the TikTok app has been upgraded to mine even more data.

“They’re actually going the other way,” he said. “They’re not reducing the amount of data they’re taking, they’re taking more.

“If you’re a government person with sensitive contacts, like you might have, depending on how senior you are, you might have the Prime Minister’s phone number, or you might just be an important part of Defence for instance, or some important government person, and they can know where you are all the time.”
