Tough new penalties for throwing lit cigarettes out the window
Tossers who throw a lit cigarette out of their car during a total fire ban will be hit with a loss of 10 demerit points and up to $11,000 in fines.
Drivers who throw lit cigarettes out the window will be slapped with five demerit points, while passengers can also be hit with a $660 fine.
More than 200 people have been caught tossing a lit cigarette this year alone.
NSW Emergency Services Minister David Elliott tells John Stanley the tough new laws will be a wake-up call for drivers.
“People weren’t listening to the penalty… so I’m just going to take their license away from them.”
