Tourism industry paying the price of long testing queues

Article image for Tourism industry paying the price of long testing queues

Frustration is mounting as Queensland’s strict COVID-19 testing regime continues to create backlog at clinics.

Arrivals from COVID-19 hotspots must have a test within the 72 hours prior to departure and again five days after entering the state.

There’s reports of up to five-hour wait times in testing queues and results are taking longer than the allotted 72-hour window in many cases.

Queensland Tourism Industry Council CEO Daniel Gschwind told John Stanley the rule is taking a toll on the tourism sector.

“That all feeds the uncertainty, John, that’s been the issue here across the state, across the nation, really, for months and months.

“There has to be a better solution for the testing. Either we have to massively increase the capacity around the country, or we have to go to rapid antigen testing.”
