Tourism industry readies up for strong summer with open borders
The tourism industry is celebrating the early re-opening of Queensland’s borders.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced fully vaccinated travellers from interstate COVID-19 hotspots will be welcomed back to the state from December 13.
Queensland Tourism Industry Council CEO Daniel Gschwind told Sofie Formica it’s news operators have been waiting for.
“I’m much better than earlier,” he said. “It’s good news!”
“We’re hanging out for a good season for the summer, for Christmas and interstate visitors are an important part of that.”
While Queenslanders took up the mantle of local travel under border restriction, Mr Gschwind says the industry is still ready to take on interstate travellers.
“We always have room for a few more – there’s a few tents available, I’m sure!
“But look, we have a big state, we have many destinations, we have all kinds of accommodations in all categories; I think we will certainly find room for a few more!”

CEO of the Queensland Hotels Association, Bernie Hogan, said opening up the borders to people to travel by road was also a big win.
He also spoke to Scott Emerson on 4BC Drive about the vaccine mandates for pubs and hotels.
