Tradie unable to fill apprenticeship spots for nine months

The Australian trade industry is calling out for quality recruits, with one university heading in the right direction.

Australian National University has announced an overhaul of its admissions process.

From 2020, school leavers will be asked to meet a minimum threshold of community service and extracurricular activities such as volunteering and part-time work which will be weighed up against their ATAR.

Mosman Smash Repairs Owner Graham Moore joins Alan Jones, saying industry, parents and government need to do more to recruit apprentices.

“It’s desperate – parents have got to educate themselves to get kids into a trade because they’re pushing kids out of Year 10, into Year 12 and a lot of the kids don’t want to go there.”

He has two vacant positions, one of which, has been up for grabs since September.

Moore says right now trade has no future and they’re in fact going backwards due, in part, to the importation of tradespeople that aren’t up to scratch.

“Parents number one – have got to get their kids into gear… school careers advisers have a lot to answer for… government have got to assist in the training”.
