Two remaining oil refineries to split $250 million in subsidies
The Coalition plans to pour $250 million into improving fuel quality and security as the election campaign enters its third full day.
The Ampol oil refinery in Brisbane and Viva Energy refinery in Victoria will share the investment under the latest election promise.
It’s believed the money will secure the jobs of more than 1200 existing workers at both facilities and create hundreds more employment opportunities.
Federal Energy and Emissions Reduction Minsiter Angus Taylor has told Spencer Howson it will help shore up Australia’s energy supplies.
“Our refineries enable us to be in a position where we can take the crude oil we produce here in Australia, … [and] refine that fuel ourselves,” he said.
“And that puts us in a strong strategic circumstance for the worst-possible outcomes.”
Mr Taylor said the move will also allow Australia to move to lower- sulfur fuels.
