Union’s ambulance demand ahead of state budget
In the lead-up to the state’s budget, unions in the health sector are pushing for an urgent injection of cash to address resourcing issues.
The government has signalled a record health spend in a bid to address some of the chronic issues in the system including high rates of ambulance ramping.
The United Workers’ Union his calling for a cash influx to guarantee more ambulance staff to cover a severe shortfall.
The UWU’s national ambulance coordinator Fiona Scalon says they want staffing levels at a point where paramedics get a half hour break on a 12-hour shift, and don’t have to work over time due to the shortages.
“If there was enough resources on the ground, that wouldn’t happen,” she told Scott Emerson.
She says it’s very distressing scenario when ambulances are ramped and there’s not enough resources to get to a new patient.
Ms Scalon says she hopes the investment in health is significant amid the ongoing crisis.
“It’s been like this now for nearly 18 months, it’s a chronic under resourcing of the health service … I am really pleased to hear the record funding announcement.”
