‘Unwanted, unnecessary’: Redlands community reject whitewater stadium plan
A community alliance in Redlands has raised concerns from ratepayers about the cost and need of a whitewater stadium planned for the 2033 Brisbane Olympics.
It comes as a group of mayors and council officials from the south east region plan to jet off to Vancouver, Los Angeles and San Francisco as part of a fact-finding mission ahead of the 2032 Games.
Spokesperson for the Community Alliance for Responsible Planning in Redlands, Lavinia Wood, says there has been no information forthcoming on what a whitewater kayaking slalom course might cost, but they estimate around $100 million.
“This is the point for us, what we have is a circumstance here in the Redlands, where we have a proposed $100 million stadium that is unwanted, unnecessary and in our view, an irresponsible waste of taxpayer funds,” she told Neil Breen.
Locals say there has been no community consultation about the proposal.

Neil says a white water rafting centre won’t be used after the Olympics.
“We as a state and a city, have to have a good hard look at ourselves and say is that what we want?”
